PESHAWAR: Islamia College Peshawar, elevated to the status of a university in 2008, has experienced a substantial increase in student enrollment, growing from 2,000 to over 8,000 students, with some estimates placing the figure closer to 10,000. In response to this growth, the management initiated plans for an extension of the university’s library to accommodate the rising number of students.
Construction on the new library building began in 2017, with an initial budget of Rs 126 million. However, despite the passage of five years, the project remains incomplete. The grey structure of the building still stands unfinished, with construction materials scattered across the premises, detracting from the prestige of this historic institution.
Fast and furious: Peshawar’s marathoners hitch a ride to the finish line!
Due to the prolonged delay, the cost of the project has escalated to Rs 157 million. The ongoing construction delay has had a significant impact on students, as the existing library lacks sufficient space to meet the needs of the expanding student body.
The administration of Islamia College University Peshawar has remained largely silent on the matter, offering no explanation for the protracted delay in completing the project. In addition to the library extension, other key facilities, including research centres and academic classrooms, have also been under construction for the past five years.
