ISLAMABAD: A woman lost her life in a tragic road accident near Faizabad Bridge on Expressway when a bus belonging to the International Islamic University (IIU) rammed into a motorcycle.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the speeding bus hit the motorcycle, causing the woman to fall under its wheels. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
Her husband, who was riding the motorcycle, miraculously survived the crash, while the bus driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Eyewitnesses also recorded the scene after the accident and posted the footage on social media, where it has gone viral.
The video shows the victim covered in blood, lying on the Expressway near the Faizabad Underpass. Officials of the Islamabad Police are also taking picture of the Islamic University bus.
HUM NEW English spoke to the Industrial Area Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the accident occurred, but officials there were unaware of the incident.
Islamabad Police Control Room was also contacted to inquire about the accident, but the operator denied having any information. “The Inspector General also asked us about the incident, but we told him we had not received any information,” the operator said.
Meanwhile, several attempts were made to speak to the Islamabad police spokesperson, but to no avail.
These developments raised suspicions that the viral video might either be fake or old.
However, a banner on the Faizabad Bridge advertising a CDA commercial plot auction was clearly visible in the video, indicating that it is recent, as the banner is currently hanging on the bridge.
Meanwhile, contact was established with the spokesperson for Islamic University, who confirmed that the tragic accident took place on Tuesday, February 25.
“Islamic University is deeply saddened by the loss of life and has affirmed full cooperation with the police to ensure transparency,” she said, adding that a delegation consisting of women staff members from the varsity had been formed to visit the deceased’s family to offer condolences.
She further informed that the IIU’s accident committee had visited the scene to determine responsibility for the accident.
Later, the police spokesperson was reached, who assured that if such an accident had occurred, legal action would be taken.
He also claimed that a first information report (FIR) of the incident would be lodged shortly.
Its not the first time a bus of the Islamic University met an accident in Islamabad.
The IIU buses have killed many people in road accidents in the past. The most tragic accident occurred on November 2, 2016 after Islamic University bus had collided with a motorcycle near G-11 sector, on Srinagar Highway. At least 28 girl students were injured in the accident while the driver had died.
Similarly, netizens have been complaining about the rash driving and traffic rules violations of the Islamic University bus drivers. Police had also taken action against some drivers few years back upon consistent complaints from commuters about reckless driving.
