ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court of Islamabad has granted bail to Umme Hassan, principal of Jamia Hafsa and wife of former Lal Masjid preacher Maulana Abdul Aziz, and others in the case registered against them in connection with the alleged attack and firing on a police van.

Judge Tahir Abbas Supra of the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court pronounced the verdict and ordered Umme Hassan’s release

Umme Hassan was arrested on February 19 from the residence of the preacher of the Madani Masjid in Margalla Town area of Islamabad.

According to the text of the FIR registered against Umme Hassan: ‘To forcefully stop the ongoing government operation against illegal encroachments in the Margalla Town area of Islamabad, the principal of Jamia Hafsa Umm Hassan arrived with a few female students and tried to stop the operation.

At the same time, she threatened that if the operation was not stopped immediately, the government would be responsible for any damage to those involved in the operation, after which the police took immediate action and arrested Umme Hassan and other female students and shifted them to the Shahzad Town police station.’

According to the text of the case: ‘Women and men broke into CDA vehicles. They also snatched anti-riot kits from the police personnel. Several people, including Umm Hassan, opened fire on CDA staff. Two bullets hit government vehicles. Nine women, including Umme Hassan, were arrested, while eight men were also among those arrested. A pistol was also recovered from the accused.

The Lal Masjid administration condemned the arrest and took the stand that ‘Umme Hassan had reached the spot unarmed along with some students of Jamia Hafsa after learning about the alleged demolition of the adjacent building of the mosque.’
