K-Electric hikes electricity price for second time in three months

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a second increase in the price of electricity for consumers of K-Electric in the third quarterly adjustment, adding to the woes of the citizens.
According to a notification issued by NEPRA, the price of electricity for K-Electric, the sole power distributor in Karachi, has been raised by Rs2.87 per unit. This will result in an additional burden of Rs4.12 for the consumers in the quarterly adjustment.
The NEPRA notification says it has approved the increase in the quarterly adjustment of January to March 2023.
NEPRA approves up to Rs4.45 per unit hike for K-Electric consumers
The decision was made on the request of K Electric, after getting the approval of the federal government. NEPRA has sent the notification to the government for implementation.
Earlier, NEPRA had already approved an increase of Rs1.25 per unit in the same quarterly adjustment, on the request of the government. The adjustment was for the period of January to March 2023.
The price hike comes amid frequent power outages and load-shedding in the city, which has affected the daily lives and businesses of the people.
