ABBOTTABAD: A man and woman from Karachi have been arrested by Abbottabad Police on charges of distributing counterfeit currency to traders while posing as tourists. The couple was taken into custody and fake currency worth Rs 136,000 was recovered from their possession as well.
The operation was conducted under the instructions of Abbottabad District Police Chief Umar Tufail, as part of an ongoing crackdown on criminal activity in the area. Changla Gali SHO Zubair Khan led the operation following complaints from local traders.
The arrested individuals, identified as Abrar, son of Shaukat Ali, and his wife, had allegedly been using counterfeit currency to purchase goods from multiple traders in the area. Traders reported that the suspects mixed genuine and fake currency notes and created confusion during transactions. The woman reportedly distracted shopkeepers while the man passed the fake notes.
A case has been registered against the suspects under sections 489B and 489C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Police confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Local business owners noted an increase in such incidents during the tourist season. In response, the business community had agreed to verify cash received from tourists and alert authorities if any suspicious activity was detected.
According to local traders, tourists have been handing over fake notes for some time. They said that this time of the year, during the tourist season, the entire business community had decided that the money given by tourists coming from other cities of the country would be specially checked. If there is any suspicion, the police would be informed.
