Karachi, other coastal areas on high alert as cyclone Biparjoy inches closer

Karachi: The Sindh government has issued alert for Karachi and other areas as cyclone Biparjoy crept closer to coastal areas of the province.
The cyclone is currently moving towards the north and north-western part of the Arabian Sea, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said predicting heavy rainfall in Thatta, Sajawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umarkot, and Tharparkar till June 17.
According to the PMD, the cyclone was 470 kilometres south of Karachi, 530 km south of Thatta and 630 km south east of Ormara.
The Sindh government has instructed the residents living along the seaside not to venture out of homes as strong winds could pose extreme danger and uproot trees and billboards.
The PMD’s cyclone warning centre has been closely monitoring the movement of the storm. Officials have predicted that the cyclone will strike Keti Bandar and Indian Gujarat on June 15.
The PMD has also issued warnings of strong winds in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sanghar, Benazirabad, Tando Aliyar and Tando Muhammad Khan.
The local administration has advised residents of DHA Sea View and Derakhshan areas to vacate their homes to avoid any possible eventuality.
Residents have been instructed to construct temporary walls using sandbags and cement at the entrances of their houses to minimize the impacts of possible waves.
The local administration has asked the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid the potential impact of the storm.
