Karachi to remain cloudy for next three days

KARACHI: The Met Department’s Early Warning Centre has forecast mostly cloudy weather in Karachi for the next three days amid high flood alert at Guddu and Sukkur barrages in the Indus River.

According to the forecast, the city is likely to experience cloudy conditions today, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with chances of drizzle and light rain at night and in the early morning.

The maximum temperature during this period is expected to remain between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius. Winds from the southwest direction over the Arabian Sea are likely to stay active.

HIGH FLOOD THREAT AT GUDDU AND SUKKUR BARRAGES

A very high-level flood is expected at Guddu and Sukkur barrages in the Indus River on September 5, according to flood monitoring officials.

Currently, Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri barrages are witnessing low-level flooding. The Flood Emergency Monitoring Cell has released fresh data on water inflows and outflows at Sindh’s barrages.

At Guddu Barrage, upstream water flow was recorded at 318,229 cusecs, while downstream discharge stood at 303,877 cusecs.

Sukkur Barrage reported upstream inflows at 285,487 cusecs and downstream discharge at 234,717 cusecs. Kotri Barrage recorded 273,844 cusecs upstream and 244,739 cusecs downstream.

At Trimmu, water levels have increased to 550,965 cusecs upstream.

Flood monitoring focal person Zubair Channa said water inflows and outflows at all barrages are being closely monitored.

There are no weak points along Sindh’s river embankments, as all structures have been reinforced according to modern safety standards.

He added that 102 locations with a history of flood vulnerability have been specially strengthened to prevent future risks.

Under precautionary measures, the Sindh government has deployed staff and provided necessary equipment at all sensitive sites to ensure rapid response in case of any emergency.

“The government is fully prepared to handle any possible flood situation,” Channa assured.
