Karachi water supply disrupted due to rain damage to Hub dam

KARACHI: The Chief Engineer of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV Project) has confirmed that the Hub Dam has sustained damage due to recent heavy rainfall.

The dam, under the jurisdiction of WAPDA, has had its water release to the Hub Canal reduced by 60 per cent to facilitate urgent repair work. As a result, Karachi is receiving only 40 million gallons per day (MGD) from the Hub Dam, down from the usual 100 MGD.

This reduction has significantly impacted water supply in the West, Keamari, and Central districts of the city.

WAPDA officials have announced that repairs are expected to be completed by 4 PM today, although the water takes approximately 12 hours to reach the Hub Pumping Station from the dam. This means the supply will not resume immediately after restoration begins.

The Chief Engineer expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the public and assured that normal water supply will be restored to affected areas once the repair work is completed.

THREE WATER PUMPING STATIONS SHUTDOWN

Earlier this week, a massive power breakdown was reported at the three main pumping stations in Karachi, cutting the city’s water supply by 200 million gallons.

A cable fault had impacted power supply to feeders at Dhabeji, Pipri, and Hub pumping stations, worsening the water shortage, according to a K-Electric spokesperson.

Areas affected include Port Qasim, Bin Qasim Town, Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Town, Liaquatabad Town, and Chanesar Town. PNS Mehran, PAF Base Faisal, and Karsaz were also expected to face water shortages, along with parts of Nazimabad and New Karachi.

Power supply also remained suspended in several parts of Karachi for over 48 hours despite heavy rains stopping two days ago, leaving citizens frustrated and angry.

The city was hit by torrential rains with heavy downpours, prompting K-Electric to shut down power in multiple areas as a safety measure.
