Khyber Pakhtunkhwa implements stricter laws against animal abuse

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has strengthened provincial legislation to combat animal abuse, focusing on the animals used for transportation.
According to the newly passed Animal Welfare Bill, 2024, overburdening or causing pain to an animal may result in imprisonment up to three months or a fine of Rs 50,000.
Such instances will also result in legal cases, which will be heard by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, the bill adds.

Regarding the animals slaughtered for food purposes, the legislation adds that the slaughterhouses will conduct themselves in a compassionate manner. Animal fighting for entertainment is strictly barred. Violation of this clause will result in three months’ imprisonment, new legislation adds.
Moreover, no one except a certified or licensed veterinarian will be allowed to perform animal surgery.
Finally, a fine of Rs 10,000 or three months’ imprisonment has been proposed for the owners who conceal information related to animal rights violations.
