GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan region grapples with significant disruptions as the vital Karakoram Highway (KKH) remained shuttered for the second consecutive day on Sunday, owing to landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains.
According to Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the G-B Chief Minister, the highway stands impassable at nearly 35 locations, with clearance operations in progress at 8 sites while 27 have been reopened for all traffic.
The prolonged closure has left numerous vehicles stranded along the KKH, exacerbating the plight of affected travelers. Among them are hundreds of passengers, including elderly individuals, children, and women, who have endured two days of harsh weather conditions without access to basic necessities such as food and shelter.
Similarly, Shahra-e-Baltistan, Ghizer-Shandur road, and Astore Valley road have also been rendered impassable for all traffic types for the second consecutive day.
As per reports from the District Administration Skardu, Shahra-e-Baltistan remains blocked at key points including Chamacho, Malupa, Barmuda Nallah, and Talu areas. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Ghizer cites avalanche activity near Gupis as the cause behind the closure of the Ghizer-Shandur road.
These closures occur amidst a broader weather alert issued by the GB government, anticipating heavy rain and snowfall in the region until March 4. The persistent inclement weather not only disrupts ground transportation but also affects aerial connections between Islamabad, Gilgit, and Skardu.
