KP govt approves Peshawar Safe City project to combat terrorism

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the Safe City Peshawar project to protect the provincial capital from terrorist incidents.
The project will be completed through the National Radio and Telecommunications Corporation (NRTC) at a cost of over Rs2.2 billion in six months.
According to official documents, the provincial cabinet was recently given a detailed briefing on the Safe City Peshawar project.
The estimated cost was originally Rs16 billion. However, the NRTC has now offered to complete the project in six months on a G-to-G basis at a cost of over Rs2.2 billion. The company has prior experience in completing several safe city projects in Punjab, the cabinet was told.

Provincial government officials informed the cabinet that under the project, modern cameras and devices will be installed at all entry points to Peshawar.
These will monitor individuals and vehicles entering the city and help identify illegal vehicles. A central control room will also be established to oversee the city’s security.
After consultations, the provincial cabinet approved the completion of the Peshawar Safe City project through NRTC on a G-to-G basis within six months.
Additionally, in the second phase, it has been decided to launch safe city projects in the districts of Dera Ismail Khan, North Waziristan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat to further enhance security against terrorism.
