KP launches probe into alleged corruption in WB-funded road projects

PESHAWAR: A high-level investigation has been initiated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into allegations of corruption and irregularities in two World Bank-funded road projects worth Rs10 billion.

The inquiry has been launched into the alleged corruption in the remodeling of Thandiani Road in Abbottabad and remodeling of Mankyal Road in Swat, both World Bank funded projects.

According to documents available to HUM News English, a five-member committee headed by the secretary of planning and development has been formed to investigate the alleged irregularities in the road projects. The committee’s mandate includes examining the tender process and procurement procedures.

The committee began its inquiry on Monday and has summoned the project director of KITE (C&W).

Additionally, Provincial Minister Shakeel Khan has established another inquiry committee, comprising Chief Engineer Ijaz Khan and SE Zubair Khan, to investigate the alleged corruption in the two projects. They have been directed to submit their report within a week.

However, sources said that C&W officials were not cooperating with the committee and refuse to provide necessary records related to the projects. The World Bank had extended a $70 million loan to the provincial government for tourism development, including these projects.
