The audit was designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the backlog cases, which have long been a significant issue within the country;s judicial system.
By physically reviewing the status of each case, the LHC aimed to identify bottleneck and inefficiencies that contribute to delays in dispensing justice in the city of 14.4 million.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the efficiency and transparency of the judiciary, which has been under fire in recent years from several quarters on its workings.
A physical audit will help provide a clearer undertaking of the types of cases that are pending, which can inform the future judicial resource allocation.
By categorising cases based on their nature and complexity, the high court can then prioritise urgent ones and allocate judges and resources accordingly.

The audit’s finding can also lead to a logistical and policy changes aimed at reforming the juridical process. If specific patterns of delays are identified, lawmakers can mull over implementing new regulations or procedures to streamline case management.
This could include measures such as increasing number of judges, improving training of judicial staff or adopting more advanced technology to facilitate case tracking and management. The country’s judicial department is notorious for still managing recording the old-fashioned way.
