Lahore–Islamabad travel distance to be cut by 100 KMs

Travel distance betweem Lahore and Islamabad to be reduced by 100 kms

ISLAMABAD: In order to ease travel between Lahore and Islamabad, the federal government has unveiled plans to reduce the distance between the two cities by nearly 100 kilometres.

As per the plans announced by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) will be extended to Kharian and further linked to Islamabad, which will cut travel time by an hour.

The new route will pass through key cities like Gujranwala, Gujrat, Kharian, Jhelum, and Gujar Khan providing a direct, high-speed alternative to the M-2.

The upgraded corridor will be widened to six lanes to handle rising traffic volumes. Officials say the realignment will not only save time and fuel but also benefit industries and logistics sectors across Punjab.

Cargo carriers, freight businesses, and daily commuters are likely to experience smoother and more cost-effective travel.

Cities along the route, especially Sialkot, Gujrat, and Kharian, could see a boost in investment and jobs due to improved access. The plan also promises better emergency response and reduced wear-and-tear on the M-2.

The minister also emphasised the fast-tracking of development work along the Multan Road to Ring Road corridor, warning that delays or poor execution would not be tolerated.
