LAHORE: Details regarding the construction of a state-run school for autistic children in Lahore was revealed in a statement by the Chief Minister of Punjab on Friday. There has long been a lack of care for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Pakistan, something that the Chief Minister is hoping to combat.

Maryam Nawaz said the project “is very close to my heart.” The initiative was forwarded by the Department of Special Education and subsequently approved by the Provincial Development Board. It aims to provide the specialized care and support necessary for children with ASD to be properly accommodated.

“Children affected by autism deserve compassion and love,” said the Chief Minister as she informed the public that the foundation for a public sector school has been laid.

The school will feature two floors and she expects that construction will be completed in one year.

However, many cases go unnoticed or are misdiagnosed.

According to the Autism Society of Pakistan, the neuro-developmental disorder affects a children’s communication, socialization, and cognition. ASD is usually detected between 18 months and three years of age. Early intervention is paramount as children can greatly improve if provided the right resources and necessary attention.
