LHC to hear petition to remove caretaker prime minister today

PM Kakar

LAHORE: A significant legal development is set to unfold as Lahore High Court Justice (LHC) Shahid Bilal Hassan prepares to hear a petition today seeking the removal of the caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar from office.

The petition argues that the appointment has become ineffective following the completion of the stipulated 90-day term.

The petitioner highlights that the caretaker prime minister’s term officially concluded on November 15, emphasising that neither the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) nor any constitutional court has extended the term. The absence of an official extension raises questions about the legal standing of the prime minister’s continued tenure.

In the filed petition, the plea is made to the court to issue an order for the immediate removal of the caretaker prime minister from office, citing the completion of the specified term and the absence of any formal extension. The petitioner contends that clarity on the matter is crucial for upholding constitutional and legal norms.

A formal application was submitted to the ECP on November 24, urging the removal of the caretaker PM, since the designated 90-day term of the caretaker government has passed.

As the LHC takes up this significant case, the outcome of the hearing could potentially shape the political landscape, adding a layer of legal scrutiny to the caretaker prime minister’s continued tenure beyond the stipulated 90 days.
