GILGIT: A high-altitude porter, Fida Hassan, hailing from Arundo village in Shigar district, was critically injured after falling into a crevasse near Snow Lake on the Biafo Glacier, in the Shigar district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Saturday as a group of trekkers was making its way towards Snow Lake from the Shigar side. The porter reportedly fell into a glacier crevasse during the journey. He was later pulled out and given initial shelter in a tent by members of the trekking party.
Due to the remoteness of the area and absence of effective communication, rescue services could not be immediately alerted. The group spent the night on the glacier, during which the porter reportedly lost a significant amount of blood. On Sunday, when an attempt was made to begin the descent, he was unable to walk due to his deteriorating condition.
Efforts to arrange rescue assistance are ongoing. Locals and family members have appealed for immediate evacuation, citing the critical nature of the injuries.
Deputy Commissioner Shigar, Arif Hussain, told HUM News English that a formal request for air rescue has been sent to Askari Aviation, and they are in coordination for the rescue mission.
13 CLIMBERS SUMMIT GASHERBRUM-I
Meanwhile, one local climber was among 13 mountaineers from various international teams who successfully summited Gasherbrum I (8,080m) on Saturday, according to confirmations from expedition organizers.
Shah Doulat, a high-altitude mountaineer from Shimshal in Hunza, reached the summit at 11:00 AM, as per an update shared on his official Instagram account.
“We would like to express our heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for their remarkable achievement in summiting Gasherbrum I (8,080m), today at 11:08 AM (PST), the eleventh-highest peak in the world. This accomplishment reflects their hard work and dedication in the face of extreme challenges. We wish the entire team a safe and successful descent,” 8K Expeditions said in a statement
According to the company, the successful summit team included Pavlo Sydorenko from Ukraine, Magdalena Arcimowicz from Poland, Migma Dorchi Sherpa, and Pem Lakpa Sherpa. The company noted that this climbing season has faced difficulties due to dry conditions, reduced manpower, and unpredictable weather. They added that ongoing poor weather forecasts for K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum II are likely to impact further summit attempts.
Seven Summit Treks also confirmed the summit of Gasherbrum-I by three of its climbers. Marco Confortola from Italy, Pasang Ngima Sherpa, and Lakpa Tasi Sherpa from Nepal reached the summit around 11:50 AM. The company said that Marco Confortola summited without the use of supplemental oxygen. Confortola is a senior mountain guide who received his UIAGM/IFMGA certification in 1993. The rest of the team is preparing for their summit bids in the coming days.
Imagine Nepal also confirmed the successful summit of Gasherbrum-I by its team at 10:44 AM Pakistan time.
