ISLAMABAD: A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was felt near Layyah district in Punjab on Saturday evening, the Meteorological Department reported.
According to the department, the epicenter of the quake was 50 kilometers east of Layyah, occurring at 7:54 p.m. at a depth of 20 kilometers.
The earthquake was felt across the district, but no emergency situation has been reported, Rescue 1122 Layyah spokesperson Waseem Hayat said.
It may be noted that Pakistan lies on three major tectonic plates—the Arabian, Eurasian, and Indian plates—which create five earthquake-prone zones within the country. Due to the intersection of multiple fault lines, seismic activity frequently occurs in the region.
