Maryam Nawaz launches electric bus in Sahiwal, announces flood-relief measures

SAHIWAL: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the province’s green electric bus service in Sahiwal on Monday, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly and affordable public transportation in smaller cities of Punjab.

At the launch ceremony, CM Maryam Nawaz announced that 30 electric buses have been allocated for Sahiwal, with a flat fare of just Rs 20, making public transport accessible for all. She also revealed that travel will be free for women, students, senior citizens, and special persons, and each bus will be equipped with Wi-Fi and a separate section for women.

“I love the people of Sahiwal and can never forget their affection,” she said, adding that her father and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was pleased to hear about her visit to the city. “Providing quality and affordable travel facilities to the people of Punjab is our top priority.”

She also said that the electric bus initiative is being extended to smaller cities across Punjab, demonstrating the government’s commitment to inclusive development.

In a separate visit to flood-hit areas in Bahawalnagar, the Chief Minister toured relief camps, met with displaced families, and announced a comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation package.

“Flood victims are not just victims to me – they are the guests of Allah,” said Maryam Nawaz during her interaction with the families.

A baby boy born in one of the relief camps was named Nawaz Sharif, while a newborn girl was named Maryam, symbolising the affection of the people for the Sharif family.

The Chief Minister outlined key relief measures, including:

  • Rs 20,000 per acre compensation for flood-affected farmers
  • Rs 50,000 for small animal losses and Rs. 500,000 for large animal losses
  • 1.5 million families to receive ration cards
  • Immediate rehabilitation for homes and livestock swept away in floods
  • 2.5 million people were safely relocated during flood emergencies

She also assured that the shortage of teachers in Punjab’s schools will be resolved within three months, and by November, 100,000 people would receive homes under government housing programs.

Maryam Nawaz took the opportunity to reaffirm her political stance, saying, “If you remove Nawaz Sharif’s services from Pakistan, nothing remains but ruins. He played a key role in the country’s nuclear capability and the development of Punjab.”

She also noted that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Pakistan were recently honored by Saudi Arabia, and the country will now play a role in the protection of the Two Holy Mosques.

Finally, the Chief Minister visited injured flood relief workers, and praised Punjab Senior Minister Marryium Aurangzeb, whose arm was burned while working in extreme heat conditions, as an example of dedication.
