Minor housemaid dies after torture by employers in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: A minor housemaid, who was allegedly tortured by a couple in Rawalpindi, has succumbed to her injuries at Holy Family Hospital.

According to the police report, 12-year-old Iqra was employed as a housemaid at the home of Rashid Shafiq and his wife, Sana Shafiq in the Rawalpindi area of Bani, for a salary of Rs 8,000 per month.

She was allegedly tortured by her employers using sticks and pipes. Despite her severe injuries, she was not taken to the hospital for four days.

She was finally brought to Holy Family Hospital yesterday in critical condition.

Hospital sources stated that Iqra’s head and brain suffered severe damage due to the violence.

The police have arrested Rashid Shafiq, his wife Sana, and another woman, Laiba, for their involvement in the torture and beating and have started investigations.

A murder case has been filed against the couple at Bani police station on the complaint of the girl’s father, Sanaullah.

 The case has been registered under charges of murder, concealing the crime, the Children Act 2004, and other relevant sections.

Police stated that during the initial investigation, the accused falsely claimed that the girl had no father. However, after conducting an inquiry, the police successfully located her father.
