Miyazaki mangoes make million-rupee debut in Karachi

KARACHI: Red and purple ‘Miyazaki’ mangoes, fetching a staggering Rs 300,000 kilogram, have made their debut in Karachi, Pakistan. Originally hailing from Japan, these prized fruits are now being cultivated in the scorching heat of Karachi’s sun.

Amidst Pakistan’s annual mango season, renowned varieties like Chaunsa, Sindhri, Langra, Dasheri, and Anwar Rathore typically take the spotlight. However, the arrival of the Miyazaki mango marks a new shift in the country’s mango landscape.

Speaking of this development, a local farmer shared insights into the uniqueness of the ‘Miyazaki’ mango. While mangoes traditionally sport a sunny yellow hue, the ‘Miyazaki’ stands out with its vibrant red and purple shades, along with its distinctive flavour profile.

The farmer revealed that in international markets, these premium mangoes fetch prices ranging from $800-$900 per kilogram, translating to Rs 250,000 to Rs 300,000 per kg in Pakistan.

Initially introduced on a trial basis, the successful cultivation of Miyazaki mangoes in Karachi has paved the way for wider production across the nation.
