Mobile services to be suspended only in sensitive areas: Interior Ministry

Mobile signals across coutnrt

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has clarified that “mobile data and Wi-Fi services” will only be suspended in areas where security concerns warrant it.

In a statement issued on Saturday, a spokesperson for the ministry said that the suspension of mobile and internet services would be limited to specific sensitive locations to ensure public safety.

The spokesperson assured that mobile and internet services across the rest of the country would remain operational as usual.

The announcement comes amidst heightened security measures ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s planned nationwide protest in Islamabad on November 24.

On November 13, PTI Chairman Imran Khan issued a “final call” to his supporters to join a protest in Islamabad on November 24.

In response, the government decided to adopt a strict stance. Punjab authorities imposed Section 144 across the province from November 23 to November 25. Entry and exit points to Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been blocked at 33 locations, with containers placed at key spots. Hostels, guest houses, and hotels have been evacuated, and vehicle entry at motorways has been restricted.

Key entry routes into Islamabad including Rawat T-Chowk, Iran Avenue, Chungi No. 26, Khanna Pul, Faizabad, Murree Road, Expressway, Ninth Avenue, and Jinnah Avenue have been blocked. Containers have also been placed at D-Chowk, Serena Chowk, and Marriott Chowk to restrict movement.

The measures have resulted in significant challenges for commuters, with many stranded in traffic or forced to take lengthy detours.

Public transport remains unavailable, further compounding the woes of daily wage workers and office-goers.

The Metro Bus service between IJP Road and Pakistan Secretariat has been suspended for two days, leaving residents with limited options for travel.

While the service in Rawalpindi from Saddar Station to Faizabad will operate today, it will remain completely suspended tomorrow in both cities.

On the other hand, The National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has issued a warning about a possible terrorist attack by Fitna-al-Khawarij (FAK) on the PTI protest.
