LAHORE: In an effort to enhance road safety awareness, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lahore collaborated with a private bank to distribute helmets among motorcyclists.
This development unfolds against the backdrop of a concerning trend in Punjab, where the number of accidents involving motorcycles has consistently maintained a prominent position, surpassing incidents involving four-wheelers.
Reports indicate that more than 100 helmets were distributed to bike riders in Lahore on Thursday as part of an ongoing road safety awareness campaign. The objective is to instill a heightened sense of responsibility within the community.
During the distribution event, Rafia Haider underscored the imperative need for motorcyclists to wear helmets, emphasising the campaign’s overarching goal of mitigating head injuries and elevating safety standards on the roads.
The distribution of helmets is slated to continue in Lahore as part of a sustained effort to cultivate awareness in the local community.
In a related development, a recent report unveiled on January 4 discloses a grim scenario, with at least nine fatalities and 885 injuries recorded in 844 road traffic incidents across Punjab within a single day.
Disturbingly, motorcycles were implicated in a staggering 72 per cent of these accidents.
According to official statistics, 404 individuals with severe injuries were promptly transported to hospitals, while 481 with minor injuries received on-site treatment from Rescue Medical Teams.
The data further delineates that among the affected individuals, there were 460 adult and 34 underage drivers, 127 pedestrians, and 307 passengers.
These distressing figures underscore the pressing need for sustained efforts to promote road safety awareness and implement measures to curtail the escalating toll of road accidents in the region.
