NADRA assistant director nabbed for issuing ID cards to Afghan nationals


The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested an assistant director of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for his involvement in issuing identity cards to Afghan nationals.

ISLAMABD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested an assistant director of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for his involvement in issuing identity cards to Afghan nationals.

An FIA spokesperson disclosed that the NADRA assistant director, in collaboration with his associates, illegally provided Pakistani identity cards to Afghan citizens.

Efforts are underway to capture other people connected to the accused.

Telecom companies to use biometrics for ID verification

Meanwhile, a recent agreement between the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and NADRA will allow telecom service providers within the country to verify identities using biometrics.

NADRA will facilitate the identity verification for telecom officials and entities in its e-Sahulat centres. The PTA will then confirm applicants’ PTA licenses during the process.

The deal was signed by PTA Chairman Major General Hafeez Ur Rehman. It is aimed at bettering efficiency and transparency in licensing procedures for telecom service providers. Pakistan has four main cellular companies serving over 195 million customers.

The country witnessed significant growth in mobile and broadband networks in past few years.
