Zulfikar Ali Bhutto served as the president from 1971 till 1973, and is recognised as the country’s first elected prime minister, decades after its independence.

His administration is noted for huge reform, including the introduction of a unified constitution, the issuance of identity cards, and the expansion of voting rights to the general populace, which were critical in establishing a more democratic framework in a country marred by decades of martial law.

Among his key achievements was the initiation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, a move that has had lasting implications for the country’s defence strategy.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was also pivotal in hosting the first Islamic summit in Pakistan, promoting solidary among Muslim nations and taking up the Palestinian cause, who still struggle for freedom till this day.

In a statement on the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari – Bhutto’s son-in-law – praised the Sindhi native as a visionary leader who transformed the country’s trajectory.

Zardari detailed Bhutto’s role in crafting the unanimous 1973 constitution, a foundational document for Pakistan’s governance.

Zardari also noted Bhutto’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with China and Afghanistan. He stated that these relationships continue to benefit Pakistan.

The establishment of steel mills in partnership with Russia was cited as an important advancement that strengthened the country’s defense industry.

Throughout his political career, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto championed the rights of the underprivileged and stood firmly against authoritarianism. His dedication to social equity and democratic values has left a lasting impact on Pakistan’s history.

Bhutto faced a contentious trial and was executed in 1979 during the junta of General Zia-ul-Haq. Despite his untimely death, he is regarded as one of the most impactful leaders in Pakistan.
