NDMA issues flood alert warning, heavy rains likely in coming days

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding heavy rains and potential flooding across the country, until July 10.

The NDMA’s National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has warned of a high risk of flooding in rivers and streams in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Key areas at risk include Marala and Qadirabad along the Chenab River, where low-level flooding is possible. The flow of several rivers, including Kabul, Sindh, Chenab, Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, Hunza, and others, is expected to increase.

Flooding risks have also been identified for North-East Punjab, South Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir, particularly in the streams originating from the Pir Panjal range in North-East Punjab. Flash flooding is also likely in the Jhelum River and its tributaries in Azad Kashmir.

The NDMA has noted that the water level in Hunza River and streams in Gilgit-Baltistan could rise unexpectedly. Additionally, flooding is expected in rivers originating from the Kirthar range in southern Balochistan, particularly in areas like Awaran, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Qila Saifullah, and Musakhel.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid crossing rivers, bridges, and flooded roads during high flow conditions. Residents of low-lying areas are urged to move valuables and livestock to safer locations in advance.

Individuals living in flood-prone areas should prepare an emergency kit with food, water, and medicine for up to five days. Local administrations and relevant agencies have been instructed to ensure readiness with machinery and pumps for drainage operations.

The NDMA has also recommended the use of the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App to stay updated on weather conditions and potential hazards. All relevant agencies have been directed to take proactive measures to address any emergencies that may arise.
