ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B).
In a statement released on Friday, the NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Centre highlighted the risk of flash floods and landslides in these regions due to rising temperatures and current weather conditions, with the danger expected to persist until August 12.
According to the NDMA, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Astore, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, and surrounding areas are at great risk of floods and landslides.

The NDMA has urged residents to avoid travel to affected areas and to stay clear of rivers. Those living in vulnerable regions have been advised to take special precautions and evacuate to safer locations if necessary.
The public had been asked to follow the instructions of local authorities and to stay updated on weather conditions and alerts.
To assist in providing timely alerts and guidelines, the NDMA has introduced the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App,” available on Google Play Store and iOS.
The NDMA has also instructed relevant departments and district administrations to take proactive measures to mitigate potential hazards from glacier bursts.
