ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has cut down the tariff rate for electric vehicle (EV) charging by 45 per cent. The new rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) is fixed at Rs23.57, down from Rs45.55, after the government made a request aimed at increasing EV adoption.
However, this is the base tariff and the final cost to the EV owners will also include taxes, margins and other adjustments. The final cost will approximately amount to Rs39.79 per kWh, as per some media reports. This is considerably lower than the post-tax cost of Rs71 or even higher, as of now.

However, NEPRA has also removed the cap of profit margins, allowing the market to determine the final price.
NEPRA made the announcement on Tuesday, saying that it will implement a cross-subsidy mechanism to manage the difference between the new and old tariffs. The current taxes and charges will continue to apply as it is.
NEPRA also said that the long-term effect of this policy will be reviewed during the upcoming fiscal year. The initiative has come in line with the broader goals of green economy and environmental protection.
The federal government is aiming for converting 30 per cent of the country’s vehicles to electric transportation by 2030.
