NEPRA reserves decision on K-Electric’s proposed price hike

NEPRA electricity prices

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reserved its decision regarding K-Electric request to raise electricity prices by Rs3.9 per unit for Karachi consumers.

During the hearing, consumers voiced strong objections to the proposed increase. They stated that K-Electric procured electricity from the national grid at a rate of Rs9.4 per unit, while its own generation costs are significantly higher, at Rs28.30 per unit.

Consumers questioned why K-Electric does not close its own plants and rely entirely on the national grid for electricity supply.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami’s representative argued that Karachi residents should not be burdened with higher electricity costs.

He advocated for the city to receive its power solely from the National Grid. Similarly, the Korangi Association of Traders and the Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry expressed their opposition to the proposed price hike.

K-Electric’s request for the increase is based on the July fuel price adjustment. If NEPRA approves the hike, it will impose an additional financial burden of 7 billion rupees on Karachi’s consumers.
