New prime minister to take oath of office by March 1

ISLAMABAD: The country’s new prime minister will take oath of his office by March 1, 2024, it was learnt on Sunday.

President Arif Alvi will administer the oath at a ceremony to be held at the President’s House either on February 29 (Thursday) or March 1 (Friday). 

Before that either on February 28 or February 29, the newly elected members of the National Assembly (MNAs) will elect leader of the House through ‘show of hands’.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, Joint Chief of Staff Committee (JCSC) Chairman General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Baber, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, members of his cabinet and foreign envoys will be in attendance.     

Similarly, high-ranking civil and military officials, judges of the Supreme Court and high courts, federal secretaries, attorney general of Pakistan, auditor general of Pakistan, chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh, provincial governors and other dignitaries will attend the event.

According to well-informed sources in the federal capital, the prime minister after taking the oath of his office will request the president to also administer the oath to the MNAs who will become ministers in the first phase. – INP
