No election role beyond security: army top brass

RAWALPINDI: The army’s top brass has underscored that the armed forces of Pakistan, at great peril to their primary responsibility, ensured a secure environment for the conduct of the 2024 general election as mandated, with no involvement in the electoral process. However, it expressed dismay over unsubstantiated allegations of interference, particularly from certain segments of the political sphere and media, including social media, labeling such actions as highly deplorable, said a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The 263rd Corps Commanders’ Conference (CCC) held at GHQ on Tuesday, presided over by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, paid homage to the supreme sacrifices of Shuhadas, including officers, men of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and citizens, who have laid down their lives for peace and stability in the country.

The forum reiterated the commitment to combat terrorism and militancy, affirming that terrorists and their supporters, acting at the behest of hostile forces to destabilize Pakistan, will be confronted with the full might of the state.

The COAS directed commanders to sustain efforts against terrorism and militancy, consolidating gains made in this regard.

Expressing concern over the ongoing repression of Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the forum condemned the human rights violations by India. It reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support to Kashmiris politically, diplomatically, and morally.

The forum also stood in solidarity with the people of Palestine, condemning the serious human rights violations and war crimes in Gaza.

Acknowledging the efforts of civil administration, law enforcement agencies, and security forces in ensuring a safe and secure environment for the electoral process, despite challenges, the forum reiterated that the armed forces had solely provided security and had no involvement in the electoral process.

Emphasizing the importance of following due legal processes with evidence rather than resorting to baseless political rhetoric, the forum expressed hopes for a stable political and economic environment post-elections, leading to peace and prosperity for Pakistan.

The military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to shoulder its constitutionally mandated responsibilities with the support of the resilient people of Pakistan. It pledged full support to the government in addressing security threats and promoting socioeconomic growth, including combating illegal activities and ensuring the respectful and safe repatriation of illegal foreigners.

In line with the prime minister’s resolve, the forum pledged to bring to justice those involved in the desecration of Shuhada monuments and attacks on military installations on May 9, under the relevant provisions of the law and Constitution.

The COAS stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of professionalism, operational readiness, and motivation during operations, emphasizing the need for excellence in training.
