Only Maulana has objections to elections in January: Gillani

ISLAMABAD: In a recent statement, former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yusuf Raza Gilani has reiterated PPP’s stance on general elections.

He emphasised the need for all political parties to have a level playing field in the upcoming elections. He stressed that it is essential for democracy that all political parties receive equal opportunities and conditions for contesting elections.

He said that apart from Maulana Fazlur Rehman, no one had any objections to holding elections in January. He added that anyone with concerns about electoral boundaries should approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Commenting on political rallies, Gilani mentioned that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held several rallies based on Cipher narrative, without elaborating further.

He clarified that there are no bans in place except for those individuals involved in the May 9 attacks, highlighting the importance of adherence to the rule of law.

Regarding handling sensitive information, Gilani asserted that if the he possessed confidential information, he would handle it with the utmost responsibility, emphasising the prime minister’s oath to protect national secrets.

Reflecting on his time as prime minister, Gilani noted that back in that day Pakistan faced significant challenges. He mentioned that when he assumed office, terrorism was at its peak in the country, highlighting the complex security environment of that period.

On the subject of regional stability, Gilani said that a stable Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s interest, reflecting the interconnectedness of the two neighboring countries.
