Over 100 housing societies to get gas connections

ISLAMABAD: Three days before the 2024 general elections, the caretaker government has made a significant move by announcing plans to provide gas connections to housing societies that have been deprived of gas supply for several years.

Sources reveal that the caretaker government aims to reopen closed gas connections for domestic consumers, with an initial focus on over 100 housing societies nationwide. The necessary groundwork has reportedly been completed by the concerned authorities.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar is expected to officially announce this initiative in an upcoming ceremony, likely to be held in Islamabad. Preparations for the event are said to be underway.

Under the proposed plan, these housing societies will be supplied LNG at a fixed rate of Rs 3600 per MMBTU, contrasting with the maximum gas rate of Rs 4000 MMBTU charged to regular domestic consumers.

Notably, the government has been blending gas and RLNG for domestic consumers due to gas shortages, resulting in a noticeable hike in gas prices.

This decision is reportedly made in accordance with instructions from the SIFC, with the Ministry of Petroleum and Sui Northern Gas Company being briefed on the proposed plan, as per insider information.
