Over 300,000 cases pending in KP courts

PESHAWAR: The backlog of pending cases seeking swift justice has soared past 300,000 in courts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As per a recent report from Wadan News, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and its subordinate courts are grappling with a staggering 321,692 pending cases, as of November 2023. The breakdown reveals 41,692 pending cases in the PHC itself, while the district courts bear the brunt with a massive 280,039 pending cases.

Comparatively, in January 2018, the Peshawar High Court had a backlog of 27,989 cases. However, from January 2018 to November 2023, a total of 168,923 cases were filed, with 166,048 cases disposed of during the same period.

In the district courts, the situation is equally alarming. The backlog in January 2018 stood at 204,456 cases, escalating to a daunting 280,039 by November 2023. Over the same period, the district courts witnessed the filing of 2,981,957 cases, while 2,910,709 cases were disposed of.

The report highlights a significant increase in the filing rate of cases in both the PHC and the district courts during the 11-month period from January 2023 to November 2023. Notably, the PHC recorded 27,379 new cases during this period, with 29,026 cases being disposed of. In contrast, the district courts saw a filing rate of 4,93,284 cases dealt with during the same timeframe.

The burgeoning caseload has prompted concerns about the efficiency of the judicial system in providing timely justice. Efforts to address the issue are crucial to ensuring a fair and expedited resolution for the multitude of pending cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
