Pakistan and US promise to root out terrorism


ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States on Tuesday vowed to eradicate terrorism, “reaffirming their shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”.

A joint statement issued after the Pakistan-US Counter-Terrorism Dialogue reads, “Both delegations underscored the critical importance of developing effective approaches to terrorist threats, including those posed by Balochistan Liberation Army [BLA], ISIS-Khorasan, and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan [TTP].”

INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORKS

Meanwhile, the statement makes it clear that joint efforts remains the focus of Pakistan and the United States.

“Both delegations emphasised the importance of building stronger institutional frameworks and developing capabilities to respond to security challenges and to counter the use of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.”

During the talks, “the United States applauded Pakistan’s continued successes to contain terrorist entities that pose a threat to the peace and security of the region and the world”.

It also offered condolences over the martyrdom of innocent civilians and security officials in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

LONG-STANDING PARTNERSHIP

On the other hand, Pakistan and the United States reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

They emphasised that “sustained and structured engagement remains vital to countering terrorism and promoting peace and stability”.

FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS

Earlier, the US on Monday added Majeed Brigade to the list of proscribed outfits, what can easily be described as a huge diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

At the same time, it also declared Balochistan Liberation Army and its alias Majeed Brigade as foreign terrorist organisations (FTO)

“Today, the Department of State is designating The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, The Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), and adding the Majeed Brigade as an alias to BLA’s previous Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) designation,” reads a statement issued by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In its response, Pakistan on Tuesday welcomed the move and said it “remains unwavering in its resolve to protect its citizens and eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We remain committed to cooperating with the international community to overcome this common challenge.”

SUSTAINED, STRUCTURAL ENGAGEMENT

Also on Tuesday, US Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory D LoGerfo called on Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.

During the meeting, Dar, who is also holds the portfolio of foreign minister, was briefed on the discussions held during the Pakistan- US Counter-Terrorism Dialogue.

Speaking on the occasion, the deputy prime minister “encouraged sustained and structured bilateral engagement on counter-terrorism, describing it “as a vital contributor to peace and stability in the region and beyond”.
