Pakistan asks meat, dairy exporters to comply with EU regulations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has issued a stern warning to meat and dairy exporters, cautioning of potential trade restrictions if they fail to adhere to European Union (EU) regulations concerning the use of antimicrobials designated for human consumption.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has communicated this directive to dairy farmers and meat exporters in the country.

In alignment with the EU’s updated requirements, the directive specifies that animals and their products intended for human consumption, exported to the EU from Pakistan, must not have been administered antimicrobials reserved for human use.

Additionally, the use of antimicrobials as growth promoters is strictly prohibited, the letter said.

The communication emphasized the crucial need for end-users, particularly farmers’ associations and exporters, to be informed about complying with EU regulations regarding the administration of antimicrobials reserved for human consumption.

Failure to adhere to these regulations may lead to trade restrictions on the export of animal products from Pakistan to the EU, the official letter said.

It is essential to note that certain antimicrobials or groups are reserved specifically for the treatment of specific infections in humans.
