ISLAMABAD: In a significant move aimed at addressing the longstanding issue of Afghan refugees in the country, Pakistan has decided to repatriate Afghan refugees back to their homeland.
Sources said that the interim federal cabinet through a circulation summary approved the decision and meeting has been called on Friday, under the chair of the interior secretary, to set the course for a comprehensive repatriation plan.
Pakistan currently hosts an estimated 1.1 million Afghan nationals, many of whom have sought refuge in the country over the years due to various conflicts and instability in Afghanistan. However, in a bid to streamline the refugee population and address national security concerns, the government has decided to initiate the process of repatriation.
According to the sources, Afghan refugees holding Proof of Registration (PoR) cards will not be repatriated under this plan. These PoR cards have been a lifeline for many Afghans, allowing them to access basic services and protection in Pakistan. The decision to exclude PoR cardholders from repatriation aims to ensure the safety and security of those who have been living in Pakistan for an extended period, the sources said.
According to the sources, the meeting will discuss the finer details of the repatriation plan, including the timeline, logistics, and support that will be provided to Afghan nationals returning to their home country. The Interior Ministry will play a pivotal role in formulating recommendations that will be forwarded to the federal cabinet for formal approval.
Pakistani authorities have emphasised that Afghan refugees with PoR cards need not worry, as they will remain unharmed and their rights will be protected.
This move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to humanitarian principles while also addressing its security concerns regarding undocumented Afghan nationals.
According to the sources, the meeting represents a crucial step towards finding a balanced and sustainable solution to the Afghan refugee crisis in Pakistan, reflecting the government’s commitment to working with international partners and the Afghan government to ensure a safe and dignified return for those who choose to do so.
