ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, along with the rest of the world, is observing International Labour Day with a commitment to promoting safe, healthy, and dignified conditions for its workers.
The day has been declared a public holiday.
All schools, colleges, private and government offices, and banks will remain closed on the day.
PM MESSAGE ON LABOUR DAY
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring safe, healthy, and dignified working conditions for labourers.
In his message for International Labour Day, he said workers are the backbone of the country’s growth. He noted that Pakistan’s Constitution and ILO conventions safeguard workers’ rights.
The PM said key reforms have improved labour protections, including ratification of global conventions and the introduction of a National Occupational Safety and Health Profile.
He added that institutions like EOBI and WWF are being strengthened to provide wider support to workers.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted government efforts to digitise labour laws and expand vocational training, especially for youth and women, through NAVTTC and TEVTAs.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to promote a culture of respect, rights, and decent work for all.
PRESIDENT MESSAGE ON LABOUR DAY
President Asif Ali Zardari has called for equipping workers and youth with modern skills to meet the demands of a fast-changing job market.
In his message for International Labour Day, he stressed the need for a joint effort by the government, private sector, and civil society to build a strong skill development system.
“Skilling our youth and workers is the key to a better future,” he said.
President Zardari paid tribute to the hard work and sacrifices of labourers, saying they are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. “Our workers run industries, build infrastructure, and drive agriculture and public services,” he noted.
He urged all stakeholders, including trade unions and employers, to ensure fair wages, safe work conditions, and respect for labour.
“Let’s honour our workers with inclusive policies and a culture that values their contribution,” he added.
Every year on May 1, people celebrate International Labour Day in observance of labourers’ and workers’ accomplishments and to raise awareness of their rights. Often referred to as “May Day,” it originated in the eight-hour day movement of the American labour union movement in the 19th century.
