Pakistan secures key slot in UNESCO executive board elections

ISLAMABAD: In a resounding diplomatic victory, Pakistan emerged triumphant at the global stage as it secured re-election to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period 2023-2027.

The election, held under the auspices of the United Nations, took place on November 15, 2023, with Pakistan securing the highest number of votes, a staggering 154.

This success comes after India’s strenuous efforts to isolate Pakistan globally, as the nation actively sought to play a more influential role in international forums. Pakistan’s re-election to the Executive Board of UNESCO is a testament to its longstanding support and constructive engagement within the United Nations.

The Executive Board of UNESCO plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s policies and programs, particularly in the realms of education, science, culture, and communication. In addition to reclaiming its seat on the Executive Board, Pakistan achieved another significant milestone by securing the position of Vice-Chairman of UNESCO, defeating India in the process. The Asia-Pacific Group, comprised of 58 member countries, bestowed an impressive 38 votes upon Pakistan, while India trailed behind with only 18 votes.

This victory is not only a substantial defeat for India but also positions Pakistan strategically to influence global policies and initiatives in education, science, culture, and communication. As a member of the Executive Board and Vice-Chairman, Pakistan is poised to advocate and represent its concerns at the highest global level, contributing to the strengthening of UNESCO’s mandate and policy-making.
