ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) introduced a new strategy to address the issue of illegal mobile phone subscriber identity modules (SIMs) by leveraging data from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The initiative is aimed at “improving” telecommunications security and curtail unauthorised SIM usage through a systematic, three-phase approach.

Beginning August 16, the PTA will initiate the first phase of the plan, where SIMs registered under fraudulent or canceled computerised national identity cards (CNICs) will be blocked. This is to address concerns over fraudulent registrations and potential misuse of mobile services.
In the second phase, the PTA will target SIMs linked to CNICs that are nearing expiration. This will prevent the continued use of SIMs associated with identity cards that are about to become invalid.
The final phase of the initiative will involve blocking SIMs registered in the names of deceased people. This step is designed to eliminate the misuse of SIMs associated with CNICs of individuals who have passed away.
The PTA has begun notifying affected users through text messages, informing them of the impending SIM closures and advising them to verify and update their registration details.
The new plan is part of the PTA’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal SIM usage, which is often linked to criminal activities such as fraud and extortion.

The phased approach will be “closely monitored” by the PTA to ensure “effective” implementation and to address any potential issues that may arise during the process.
