ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the government is implementing key reforms aimed at transforming Pakistan into a leading tourist destination.
He highlighted the importance of these changes during his message on World Tourism Day, observed on September 27.
“One of our significant steps is the introduction of a tourist-friendly visa policy. Tourists from 126 countries can now obtain fast-track visas without any fees,” the prime minister said.
“I believe this will greatly contribute to the promotion of tourism and unlock new opportunities for socioeconomic growth in Pakistan.”
Joining the global celebration of World Tourism Day, organised under the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the prime minister highlighted this year’s theme, ‘Tourism and Peace.’
He stressed that tourism plays a crucial role in fostering peace and understanding among different nations and cultures. “Tourism unites people, promoting harmony, empathy, and cross-cultural connections,” he added.
PM Sharif also acknowledged the growing importance of tourism worldwide, noting its ability to enhance people-to-people connections, challenge misconceptions, and promote a positive global image. He pointed out how the tourism industry is contributing to inclusive economic development, building relationships, and stimulating growth.
“Pakistan is home to some of the world’s oldest civilisations, including Mehrgarh, Mohenjo Daro, Harappa, and Gandhara,” he said. “This heritage presents us with a unique opportunity to develop tourism and create livelihood opportunities, even in the most remote areas of our country.”
He further explained that the tourism sector holds immense potential to fuel economic growth, generate employment, and contribute to peace through cultural exchange.
The prime minister encouraged young Pakistanis to embrace innovative solutions and entrepreneurial ventures that could help further develop the industry.
“The government is actively supporting entrepreneurship within tourism,” PM Sharif noted. “This sector is vital in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thanks to its strong connections with other industries.”
Lastly, the prime minister expressed satisfaction with efforts at both the federal and provincial levels to promote various forms of tourism, including adventure, religious, heritage, eco, and cultural tourism across all regions of Pakistan.
