Pakistan’s leadership renews commitment on World Human Rights day

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, in sync with the global community, observes World Human Rights Day on December 10, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This year’s theme, “Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All,” aims to foster awareness and prompt action for the protection of human rights worldwide.

President Dr Arif Alvi, in a statement marking the occasion, reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to upholding citizens’ rights, aligning with the country’s Constitution, the UDHR, and other international agreements. He emphasised that the Constitution guarantees fundamental rights for all citizens, and Pakistan has implemented various legal, economic, and social measures to promote and safeguard these rights.

President Alvi underscored Pakistan’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment with equal opportunities for all minority groups, ensuring their social, political, and economic rights. He expressed concern about the situation of the Palestinian people, highlighting their deprivation of basic rights and facing state terrorism and ethnic cleansing by Israel. President Alvi urged international intervention, criticizing the global community for its failure to address Israel’s actions and prevent the genocide of the Palestinian people.

Furthermore, President Alvi called for global attention to human rights abuses in India-held Kashmir, holding India accountable for its actions in the region.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar also affirmed the government’s commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights domestically and internationally on World Human Rights Day. In his statement, he criticized India for violating human rights norms and conventions in India-held Kashmir (IHK), pledging ongoing moral, diplomatic, and political support for the Kashmiri people’s struggle against Indian occupation and oppression. He reiterated Pakistan’s call for an end to human rights abuses in IHK.

The caretaker premier also condemned Israel’s actions in Palestine, citing blatant violations of human rights in Gaza resulting in numerous casualties. He called for an end to these abuses, condemning Israel’s purposeful, indiscriminate, and disproportionate targeting of people as a clear breach of international law and human rights standards.
