Pakistan’s Noor Zaman brings U-23 squash crown home

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Noor Zaman claimed the Under-23 World Squash Championship title in a thrilling five-set final, defeating Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey 2-3 after an emotional comeback that brought the young champion to tears.

The final, held in Karachi, saw El Torkey dominate the opening two games. However, Noor Zaman rallied with exceptional focus and determination, winning the next three sets to clinch the championship in front of a home crowd.

It was a lucky day for Pakistan in squash as the country bagged Gold and Silver in Plate Event of the Under-23 World Squash Championships 2025.

In the Men’s Event, Pakistani Player Muhammad Ammad won the final by beating Karim Michael of Canada, and in the Women’s Final Pakistan’s Amna Fayyaz lost to Yeheni Kuruppu (Sri).

Speaking after his historic win, an emotional Noor Zaman said his only thought while trailing 0-2 was to stay focused and fight till the end. “This victory is the result of hard work…I just told myself to play my game and never give up.”

Earlier in the semi-final, Noor defeated Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran with a commanding performance, winning the first two games 6-11 and 2-11. He was leading the third 4-6 when Chandaran withdrew due to injury. In the other semi-final, Egypt’s El Torkey had beaten compatriot Ibrahim Elkabbani 1-3.

Noor’s victory marks a significant moment for Pakistani squash, reviving memories of the country’s glorious past in the sport during The Khan squash family‘s era. His performance drew praise from across the political spectrum.

Congratulations pour in for Noor Zaman

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Noor Zaman and the nation on the victory, calling the young athlete a symbol of national pride. “Noor has made Pakistan’s name shine across the world. His success signals the return of Pakistan to its rightful place in squash.”

He said also commended the great performance by Muhammad Ammad and Amna Fayyaz in the plate events.

President Asif Ali Zardari also lauded Noor Zaman, expressing hope for more victories in the future.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman joined in, calling Noor Zaman a national asset and a role model for aspiring athletes. “His hard work and talent have brought home this title after a long gap,” said Rehman.
