Pak’s envoy warns of regional crisis amid India’s arms procurement

WEB DESK: Pakistan’s concerns over India’s heightened arms procurement and its potential to destabilise South Asia’s security landscape were articulated by Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Munir Akram.

Ambassador Akram shared these concerns during a session of the UN Disarmament Commission. He warned of the “volatile and explosive” nature of the security environment in South Asia, attributing it to India’s significant arms buildup in recent years.

He highlighted India’s adoption of war-fighting doctrines like “Cold Start,” which advocates for a surprise attack on Pakistan, and underscored India’s status as the world’s largest arms importer.

The ambassador expressed dismay over the enduring dispute in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), emphasising the suppression of Kashmiri rights and the escalation of tensions due to the presence of two armies in close proximity and the induction of destabilising weapons.

Ambassador Akram stressed the need for decisive action by the international community to avert a potential regional and global catastrophe. He noted Pakistan’s commitment to achieving security with minimal armaments and its proposal for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia.

Ambassador Akram expressed disappointment over India’s unilateral nuclear weapons tests and its reluctance to engage in meaningful discussions to resolve outstanding disputes, particularly regarding IIOJK, despite Pakistan’s efforts towards restraint and dialogue.

Ambassador Akram urged the Disarmament Commission to play a role in enhancing global and regional security, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
