Palestine policy unchanged, decision on sending force to be made: Dar

Dar says leadership to decide about sending force to Palestine

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday said the Gaza peace plan envisaged deploying a peace force — “temporary international stabilization force” — in Palestine and Indonesia had offered contributing a 20,000-strong contingent for the purpose.

Leadership in Pakistan would make a decision to send personnel for being part of the peace force, Dar hoped at a press conference in Islamabad as he explained the Gaza peace plan to the audience.

He also made it clear that Pakistan had not into any direct agreement with Israel and stood for a Palestinian state under the two-state solution with Al-Quds al-Sharif [Jerusalem] as its capital.

Rejecting the criticism by some circles, he wondered whether the critics wanted to see children continue dying in Gaza and said Pakistan’s policy on Palestine was very clear and there would no change in the same.

Dar, who is also Pakistan’s foreign minister, reminded the media persons that Pakistan wasn’t alone in welcoming the Gaza peace plan.

His remarks came eight Arab League and OIC members — Pakistan being one of them — had presented a united front on the issue to press for a solution to the current alarming situation in Gaza.

Advising the people to avoid indulge in unjustified criticism, Dar said the Palestinian Authority — internationally recognised representative of the Palestinian people — on Tuesday had welcomed the Gaza peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump.

COMMITTED TO ACHIEVE A COMPREHENSIVE DEAL

On Monday, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, the UAE, Jordan, Egypt and Indonesia had issued a statement in which they reaffirmed “their joint commitment to work with the United States to end the war in Gaza through a comprehensive deal”.

They also welcomed the announcement by Trump to prevent the displacement of Palestinians and not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

IN CONTACT WITH SAUDI ARABIA

And on Tuesday, Dar told media persons that most members of the transitional authority headed by Trump would be Palestinians.

Moreover, the foreign minister said his Saudi counterpart was in contact constantly over the Gaza peace deal.

HAMAS TOO WILL ACCEPT IT

On the other hand, Dar said he did not feel that Hamas would reject the Gaza peace plan.

“We were assured that Hamas would accept the deal,” he said without elaborating who gave the assurance. But he may be pointing to Qatar which is scheduled to hold consultations with Hamas and Turkiye on Tuesday.

It’s a developing story. Details to follow.
