LAHORE: Following the windstorm across Punjab on Thursday, the province is bracing for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over the next three days, with the inclement weather expected to persist until May 4, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned on Friday. The current weather system brings a high likelihood of lightning and strong winds, raising concerns about potential hazards.
While cities like Lahore struggle to restore power, the last night’s severe storms claimed two lives and left 24 injured in various parts of the province. At least nine buildings were partially damaged due to the extreme weather. The affected divisions include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalpur.
Rain aftermath: Many areas of Lahore without electricity
In hilly regions such as Murree and Galliyat, the PDMA has cautioned about possible landslides triggered by the downpour. Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathi has directed district administrations and rescue teams to remain on high alert to respond to emergencies. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather advisories.
The heavy rain and strong winds swept through Lahore, causing widespread power outages, toppling trees. According to Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), more than 207 feeders tripped due to the storm, plunging several neighbourhoods into darkness. Areas affected included Sadar, Cantt, Rizwan Garden, Dharampura, Gulberg, Samanabad, Ichhra, Muslim Town and Garden Town. LESCO officials stated that restoration efforts would begin as soon as the rain subsided. The storm also caused a tree to fall on College Road while heavy rainfall was reported in Mason Road, Gaddafi Stadium and surrounding areas.
