PM Sharif meets WB president, IMF managing director

NEW YORK: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with World Bank (WB) Group President Ajay Banga on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation to boost private sector operations and mobilise development resources.

PM Sharif commended Ajay Banga for his efforts in transforming the World Bank into a more effective and responsive development partner. He also expressed appreciation for the Bank’s long-standing support to Pakistan, particularly during times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic and devastating floods.

During the meeting, the premier also briefed the WB President on Pakistan’s ongoing reform agenda, which he said has played a pivotal role in steering the country toward macroeconomic stability. He noted that the reforms have helped restore investor confidence and laid the groundwork for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

PM Sharif also welcomed the World Bank’s new Country Partnership Framework, describing it as a timely and strategic initiative that aligns with Pakistan’s development priorities. He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to close coordination with provincial administrations to ensure the effective implementation of development programs.

World Bank President Ajay Banga praised Pakistan’s reform efforts and reaffirmed the institution’s support for the country’s development goals, particularly in strengthening private sector engagement and driving long-term economic resilience.

PM MEETS IMF MD KRISTALINA GEORGIEVA

PM Sharif also held a meeting with International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. During their discussions, the prime minister expressed appreciation for the IMF’s ongoing support to Pakistan. He highlighted the crucial role of IMF programs, including the Stand-By Arrangement, Extended Fund Facility, and Resilience & Sustainability Facility, in supporting Pakistan’s economic reforms and recovery efforts.

The premier noted that while Pakistan was making steady progress in meeting IMF targets, the recent devastating floods had impacted the economy and should be considered during the IMF’s upcoming review. MD Georgieva conveyed her condolences to those affected by the floods and spoke on the importance of damage assessments to guide recovery priorities. She also praised Pakistan’s commitment to sound macroeconomic policies and assured continued IMF support for the country’s reform agenda and sustainable economic growth.

PM SHARIF MEETS KUWAITI PRINCE, SCHEDULED TO MEET TRUMP

PM Sharif also held a meeting with the Crown Prince of Kuwait. The two leaders exchanged views on key regional and international developments, including the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

The Crown Prince commended Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in highlighting the plight of Palestinians and exposing the atrocities committed against them. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced cooperation at bilateral and multilateral forums.

Prime Minister Sharif is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in the coming hours today, and will also attend a dinner hosted by President Trump in honor of world leaders. Additionally, he will meet with the Emir of Qatar, and the Chinese Premier, with Palestine expected to be a key topic of discussion.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar will also engage with leaders from Saudi Arabia, China, Qatar, the UAE, Austria, Kuwait, and other partner countries to advance Pakistan’s economic and diplomatic objectives.
