PM Shehbaz on agriculture loans

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review reforms in the agriculture sector, stressing the need to modernise the industry to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.

He said that the agriculture sector was being developed along modern lines to meet the growing demands of the country, adding that the sector’s vast potential must be fully utilised to ensure immediate economic growth.

“Pakistan is blessed with fertile land, skilled agricultural experts, and hardworking farmers,” the prime minister said, urging authorities to ensure the provision of agricultural loans to farmers on easy terms.

He directed that greater focus be placed on agricultural research to enhance national crop yields and production. The premier also called for the formulation of a sustainable, long-term policy for agricultural and industrial development to promote both farming and forestry — which he termed vital for addressing the impacts of climate change.

“To drive real progress, we must develop an integrated strategy for the agricultural sector in consultation with all stakeholders,” the prime minister said, adding that coordination with provincial governments must also be ensured in this regard.

During the meeting, the prime minister instructed the relevant authorities to present a National Agri-Innovation Plan and expedite ongoing reforms in the seed certification system. He further called for an effective strategy to promote high-quality seeds.

He reaffirmed that promoting modern agricultural technologies remained a top government priority and directed the formation of a comprehensive regulatory framework for the sector.

The meeting was briefed on recommendations presented by the working group established for agricultural reforms.
