PMD issues heatwave alert for May 2025

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the month of May 2025, saying that the first spike in temperature for this month is expected during next three to four days. The Met department has predicted that high pressure is likely to grip most parts of the country on May 15.

Under the influence of this meteorological condition, the daytime temperatures are likely to remain 04 to 06 °C above normal in southern half of the country, including Sindh, southern Punjab and Balochistan. The notification mentions the time period from May 15-20 as the riskier period.

Day temperatures are also likely to remain 05 to 07 °C above normal in upper half of the country, including central & upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan from May 15 to 19.

A westerly weather system is expected to enter upper parts of the country on evening and night of May 19. Rain with wind and thunderstorm is also expected in Kashmir, Islamabad, Pothohar region including northeast Punjab, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan on May 19 and 20.

The statement issued by the PMD also said that the heatwave conditions in the country can impact the senior citizens, and agricultural produce. The general public especially children, women and senior citizens are advised to take precautionary measures.

The statement asks citizens to avoid exposure to direct sun light during the day time and remain hydrated. Farmers are advised to manage their crop activities keeping in view the weather conditions and take care of their livestock as well. Rising temperatures in northern areas may enhance snowmelt rate during the forecast period.

Judicious use of water is also requested in all fields of life.
