PMDC applies for WFME accreditation

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has formally submitted an application to the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) for accreditation.
PMDC President Prof Rizwan Taj said that he has prioritised the WFME recognition following the promulgation of the PMDC Act 2022.
He said that an expert body has been set up and numerous meetings and deliberations have already taken place to meet the WFME requirements.
The PMDC president said that the medical education regulatory body also organised workshops in 124 colleges across the country for the accreditation.
He said that a panel of experts from across the country has been engaged to facilitate the WFME accreditation process. The initial step involve the assessment of PMDC’s application by WFME, which has approved its eligibility for recognition.
Meanwhile, the PMDC and the WFME will collaborate to schedule a visit by assessors from the international body for a thorough inspection of the PMDC-run colleges and universities and its regulatory system.
The comprehensive evaluation prior to the accreditation of the PMDC by the WFME is likely to conclude before the end of 2024.
The PMDC recognition by the WFME will allow Pakistani medical graduates to pursue training and employment in the United States and other countries.
The PMDC president expressed the PMD’s commitment to meeting mandatory WFME requirements standards and international best practices to achieve global recognition for Pakistan’s medical education and doctors.
